Our History

The history of enterprise started on August 4, 1934, when blast furnace #1 produced the first hot metal.

On August 20, 1939 the first cast of Bessemer steel was produced.

On March 31, 1949 blast furnace 1 was blown in.

On August 12, 1956 continuous light-section rolling mill 250-1 was put into operation.

On February 28, 1957 blooming mill 1250 1 was hot tested.

On April 12, 1957 continuous four-strand wire rod mill 250-1 was put into operation.

On December 25, 1957 commissioned 35-ton converter produced the first steel in Kryvyi Rih in post-war period. The plant became a full-cycle iron-and-steel works.

On March 18, 1958 the first phase of blooming mill 1150 was put into operation.

On December 31, 1960 600-ton open-hearth furnace 1 was commissioned.

In 1964 blooming mill 1300 2 was commissioned.

In 1968 the plant engineer office was created.

In 1968 the Railway Transport Office of Metallurgical Complex was created.

On July 8, 1972 the first double-hearth furnace was commissioned at Open-Hearth Shop.

On December 30, 1974 blast furnace #9 with the highest capacity in the world and working volume of 5,000 m³ was blown in. Central Power Plant 3 was commissioned as well.

In 1996 restructuring of integrated works started. Novokryvorizkyi Mining and Beneficiation Complex joined Kryvorizhstal as an organization department, and agro-industrial complex was created.

In 1997 Coke and By-Product Plant joined the Integrated Works.

In 2001 Mine Department for Iron-Ore Underground Mining was organized as a separate subdivision of Kryvorizhstal on the basis of separate production facilities of the Kirov Iron Ore Mining Office.

Since that time the Integrated Works became a metallurgical plant with full iron-and-steel cycle including:

Since 2004 the plant was referred to as JSC Kryvyi Rih Mining and Metallurgical Integrated Works.

In 2005 the plant joined Mittal Steel and ArcelorMittal since 2007.

In June 2007 General Shareholders Meeting decided to change the name of the plant from OJSC Mittal Steel Kryvyi Rih to OJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih.

On August 11, 2008 after the capital repair with modernization 8 Blast Furnace was blown-in with an effective capacity of 2,700 m³.

On May 14, 2009 due to force majeure ArcelorMittal Duisburg GmbH and the State Property Fund of Ukraine signed а Contract about the introduction of changes in the Sale and Purchase Agreement. Under this Agreement October 1, 2008 was determined as the date of force majeure circumstances (force majeure) beginning, confirmed by the Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine.

In accordance with the Additional agreement to the Sale and Purchase Agreement dated on May 14, 2009, ArcelorMittal Duisburg GmbH has the right to suspend the execution of certain investment obligations during the term of force majeure. The total period of such obligations is extended under the terms of the Supplemental agreement.

On June 2, 2010 – construction of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih’s first continuous casting machine (CCM) began.

On April 21, 2011 General Shareholders Meeting decided to change the name of the plant to Public Joint Stock Company ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih.

October 3, 2011 – ArcelorMittal Duisburg GmbH (shareholder of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih) and the State Property Fund of Ukraine have signed an Amendment to the Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) for Kryvorizhstal. Despite the fact that economic indicators of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih and steel industry worldwide would allow the continued postponement of certain obligations under SPA, ArcelorMittal Duisburg has agreed to end this period of Force Majeure, with effect on December 31, 2011. Accordingly since January 1, 2012 PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih will continue fulfillment of obligations under the terms of the signed agreement.

In October 2011 PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih completed construction of its first continuous casting machine as one of the key investment projects according to the Sale and Purchase Agreement of the plant.

In March 2011 – State Property Fund of Ukraine affirmed that PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih fulfilled social investment obligations according to the Sale and Purchase Agreement of the plant.

In February 2013 – a capacity of continuous casting machine of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih exceeded 100,000 tons of billets following the results in January 2013. This achievement provides planned capacity of continuous caster equipment of 1,200,000 tons of steel billets per year.

July 23, 2015 – Blast furnace No.6 was commissioned after reconstruction with introduction of environmental measures. Total overhaul of blast furnace No.6 of I grade became one of the key projects of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih’s investment program.

On October 12, 2016, Paramjit Kahlon, CEO of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, and Volodymyr Groysman, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, took part in the ceremony of symbolic commissioning of pulverized coal injection system at Blast Furnace #9.

February 21, 2017 – construction of the new Ladle Furnace and Continuous Caster (LFCC) No. 2 started. The company invested more than $72M in the construction of the new production facility. The capacity of the new continuous casting machine is 1.3MT per year.

February 27, 2017. PJSC “ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih” has started hot tests of Coke Oven Battery #6, a very new in technology of stamp charging - 1st of its kind in Ukraine.

December 27, 2017 – construction of the stage 1 of the Tsentralne tailings storage facility, a special hydraulic structure designed for storing waste ore and beneficiation waste, was completed. The project was implemented as part of the company's investment program to modernize production and reduce the environmental load.

May 3, 2018 – the company started hot tests at the new coke oven battery No. 5.

July 11, 2019 – tests with hot metal of the new twin ladle–furnace unit and continuous casting machine No. 3 (CCM–3) began.

October 3, 2019 – ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih has started hot tests of the light section mill No. 250–4, in the reconstruction of which more than $50M were invested. Part of the funds was spent on the purchase of equipment from Italian company Danieli.

December 27, 2019 – In the second half of December, the rolling mill operators started hot tests of the new line for production of rebar with spooler coiling on the light section mill No. 250–4.

February 17, 2020 – tests with hot metal of the new twin ladle–furnace unit and continuous casting machine No. 2 (CCM–2) started. At the same time, the company is ramping up the continuous casting machine No. 3 (CCM–3) to its design capacity.

March 2020 – the company stops the operation of the THF No. 6. Decommissioning of THF–6 marks the shutdown of the company's Open–Hearth Furnace Shop.

March 17, 2020 – ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih filed a Notification to the State Architecture and Construction Inspectorate of Ukraine about the start of the preparatory stage of construction of the new Stepovyi–2 dump. This dump is aimed to store the oxidized ore, which is extracted together with the magnetite ore in the open pit No.3 of the company.

May 14, 2020 – the company stopped operation at the Blooming Shop Area No. 1. As part of its Sustainable Development Strategy, the company is phasing out obsolete technologies, ensuring the renewal of production facilities with the implementation of environmental projects.

June 25, 2020 – ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih made the first supply of its rebar for the construction of a bridge across the Dnipro River in Zaporizhzhia.

September 10, 2020 – the project for the construction of a modern production facility – a pellet plant, the operation of which will allow the decommissioning of two existing sinter shops of the company. An agreement was signed with the management of Sinosteel (China) to create a project and supply equipment for the construction of a pellet plant.

On October 8, 2020 – a foundation stone ceremony for the new pellet plant was held.

October 21, 2020 – a 3D project for a modern cancer treatment center, a diagnostic and treatment medical facility, was presented in Kryvyi Rih. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih became the key investor in the construction project of the new cancer treatment center in the city.

April 14, 2021 – Igor Petrashko, Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine, and Mauro Longobardo, CEO of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, signed a Memorandum on new investment projects. The company plans to invest about $1 bln. in new projects for eco-modernization and production development.

May 20, 2021 – the educational project "New Plant" on preparation of steelmakers of the future – workers of the pellet plant was presented. The company decided to train 300 steelmakers of the new formation for this plant and is doing it in collaboration with two Kryvyi Rih universities: Kryvyi Rih National University and the State University of Economics and Technology. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih signed a memorandum on a new bachelor's curriculum with them, as well as with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

July 2021 – the company started a comprehensive reconstruction of blast furnace No. 9 (project cost – $270M). After the renovation, the total dust emissions from BF No. 9 will be significantly reduced due to a new dust-exhaust system and modern gas cleaning. The BF-9 reconstruction and pellet plant construction projects are the key ones in the company's investment program for production renovation and eco-modernization.

December 15, 2021 – AirProducts has signed an agreement to build the most advanced air separation unit (ASU) in Kryvyi Rih within a framework of a joint venture (JV) with ArcelorMittal – Kryvyi Rih Industrial Gases LLC (KRIG). The JV will be the owner and AirProducts will be managing the new facility. The project will be financially supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and its specialists will monitor compliance with environmental standards.

March 2022 – due to a full–scale war in Ukraine, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih reduced operations to a technical minimum to cope with the shortage of critical raw materials.

April 10, 2022 – the production restart began with the relaunch of blast furnace No. 6. Previously, the company ensured supplies of coal and other materials and completely restructured logistics.

Since July 2022 – the vast majority of the team, including management and expatriate employees, have been working at 2/3 of the workload.

October 2022 – the process of decommissioning of the oldest coke batteries Nos. 1 and 2 started. Having shut down these batteries, pollutant emissions from coke production will be reduced by 37%

January 2023 – ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is decommissioning its oldest sinter plant, which has been providing sinter to Blast Furnace Shop No.1 earlier at the level of 8 000 tons per day. Instead of four sinter shops, the company will operate by three shops and ore yard of sinter shop of Steel Plant, where ore mix will be formed for production processes.
