Zhanbek Yesmakhanov

Chief Occupational Health and Safety Officer

Zhanbek Yesmakhanov is appointed Chief Occupational Health and Safety Officer effective 1 November 2024.

In this position, he is responsible for the safety culture improvement and the modern global occupational health and safety practices implementation.

Zhanbek Yesmakhanov has 29 years of experience in occupational safety and environmental protection. He joined ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih on 10 June 2020 as Director of Occupational Health and Safety, and Environment Department.

He began his career at Hurricane Hydrocarbons Ltd, a Canadian oil and gas company, where he provided support for production processes. His previous positions include Senior Project Manager and Lead Consultant at DuPont, Head of Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment Protection Department at Chevron on the Tengizchevroil project, and multinational oil and gas company British Petroleum. As these companies are recognised international leaders in occupational health, safety and environmental protection, Zhanbek Yesmakhanov had the opportunity to study and implement the most relevant global best practices. This experience later allowed him to become a consultant to various companies in the field of occupational health, safety, and environmental protection.

Zhanbek Yesmakhanov received his first degree in law from the Kazakh Academic University (Almaty). He received a second degree and a diploma in mining and petroleum engineering from the Kazakh National Technical University. He holds an MBA from Edinburgh Business School. He is also a certified auditor for ISO 45001 (EHS) and ISO 9001 (QMS). He holds an international diploma in occupational health and safety, the NEBOSH International Diploma.
